Under 7's and 8's Match Reports

22nd November 2009

Weymouth v Dorchester - Under 7's

Weymouth 8, Dorchester 6

Both sides were depleted due to illness and the decision was made to allow under 8 players to make up the numbers.  Dorchester opened the scoring before tries from Nathan Calton, James Dobson and Henry Bell gave Weymouth a healthy lead.
Dorchester managed a further score to cut the deficit to one at half time.

After the interval Jordi Murphy opened his account for Weymouth with a slick move.  From then on the Seasiders matched Dorchester try for try with scores for Weymouth from Nathan Calton, Tyler Baker and Kyle Becalik (2).

Weymouth 5, Dorchester 2

The second game saw a Weymouth team that was much fitter and determined than earlier in the season and they proved very resilient against a competent Dorchester team.  Daniel Kingman crossed the whitewash first for Weymouth after an impressive run from deep in his own half.  Dorchester responded almost immediately and then Daniel Kingman proved that his first try was no fluke by scoring a second, equally impressive, try.

The second half became a benefit for Kyle Becalik; he scored two tries in quick succession before Dorchester replied.  Not content with that, Becalik added a further score to finish the proceedings and gain a well deserved hat trick.

It was an extremely accomplished display by the whole team, with man of the match award narrowly going to Daniel Kingman.

Weymouth v Dorchester Under 8's

The day started with heavy downpours of rain which made the conditions muddy, and the ball slippery.  It is to the credit of both teams that they played so well in such difficult conditions.

Weymouth 9 Dorchester 10

Both teams made the  other work hard for each try with some good defending taking the opposition near to the limit of their tags on several occasions. Dorchester showed good use of the ball to put individuals in attacking positions, whereas Weymouth relied on close support of the ball to carry it across the line.
Try scorers for Weymouth Henry Bell 2, Jack Hayward 2, Robert Hunter 2, James Dobson, Kit Harvey and Tyler Baker

Weymouth 5, Dorchester 4

Several of the players had helped the under 7's as well as playing for the under 8's so the pace of the game was less frenetic than the first.  Again good defending made each team work hard for every try, with Harry Philpott scoring in his first session and game for the club.  Several spectacular mud slides were observed in the pursuit of tries.  Weymouth slightly edged the defence which allowed them to win by one try.  Try scorers for Weymouth Harry Philpott, Henry Bell, Jack Hayward, Robert Hunter, and Tyler Baker.

Under 8's player of the day went to Kit Harvey for his penetrating straight runs and ceaseless defence.

Well Done to both teams

8th November 2009

There should be some very tired children around after a massive effort this morning.  The main plus point Weymouth can take from the tournament is that, they are a team.  Weymouth do not have to rely on any one person to score, as can be seen by the spread of try scorers.

Weymouth 3 Trowbridge 3
The first game saw them up against a quite large Trowbridge team, with match ending in a draw.  This was down to an accomplished attack by Weymouth with everyone receiving support from several players  whenever tagged.  Try scorers Robert Hunter, Tyler Baker and Jack Hayward.

Weymouth 5 Chard 7
With a half time score of 3 all it looked like a try for try game.  However Weymouth in the second half had a wobble.  Passes to the face and stepping outside the line being the main culprits to Weymouth surrendering the ball to the opposition.  Try scorers  Jack Hayward 2, Nathan Calton, Kit Harvey and Robert Hunter.

Weymouth 2 Sherborne 5
Weymouth put in a very spirited game against a Sherbourne team relying on one player to score their tries.  This player just had the edge on a Weymouth team possibly tired from two matches in a row.  Weymouth’s defence had Sherborne going backwards several times throughout the match.  Weymouths attack just failed to gel at crucial moments which showed in the score line. Try Scorers Nathan Calton and Ben Martin.

Weymouth 6 Ivel Barbarians 6
This match saw Weymouth’s best game of the tournament.  With attacks being well supported and defending across the pitch working well.  A dubious try (he put the ball down outside of the sideline) in the final moments just robbing Weymouth of the win.  Try scorers Henry Bell 3, Nathan Calton, Robert Hunter, and Ben Martin.

The player of the day went to Tyler Baker who had a superb game in defence.  On several occasions he ran back to pull off try denying tags, when it would seem the player could not be stopped.
